College Admission Policy
Students who are intended Architecture and the Arts majors must be admitted to the College of Architecture and the Arts (CARTA) before they have completed 75 credit hours or two semesters at Florida International University . No student will be allowed to take a junior- or senior-level Architecture and the Arts course until he/she has been admitted to the college. In addition to standard admission requirements, students seeking admission to the College of Architecture and the Arts (CARTA) must have completed successfully all 7 pre-core courses or their college-approved equivalents. It is the student's responsibility to find out what the requirements are. All of them are listed and explained in the University Catalog.

Three Kinds of Requirements
Requirements set by:
  1. The University (University Requirements)

University Requirements (All Students at FIU)

  2. The Academic Units, in this case, The College of Architecture and the Arts (Architecture and the Arts Requirements)

Architecture and The Arts (All Students who have an A&S Major)

  3. The Academic Department or Program (Major requirements)

    Major Requirements

Hybird Class Attendance: First Day
It is the policy of the College of Architecture and the Arts (CARTA) to allow faculty to require attendance on the first day of academic classes. Non-attending students may be dropped from the course. This policy is implemented as follows:

Departments identify sections with mandatory first day attendance policies when department schedules are given to the Dean's Office for input. Students will be dropped for missing the first day only from those sections so identified.

Courses/sections are identified in the registration booklet and on the interactive registration web site as "Students Absent From First Day of Class Will be Dropped."

The Dean's Office drops cap to zero after the first class to prevent others from registering.

Immediately after the first class, the professor gives the names and student numbers of students to be dropped to the departmental secretary. Note: Students will not be dropped after the first week of class.

The departmental secretary drops and notifies students that they have been dropped.

This policy is effective with the scheduling of Spring Semester, 2001, courses.

Prerequisites Policy
Pre-requisite course requirements for entry into upper-level College courses will be strictly enforced. Students will be administratively dropped from courses when they lack the required prerequisite course or courses.

The list of course pre-requisites established by each department/school will be available to all students via the Undergraduate Student Services website. The Undergraduate Advising Office, throughout the registration period, will administratively drop all students who do not meet the set requirements. Students who are dropped are notified through their FIU e-mail accounts immediately. In addition, they will receive a full tuition refund for the course from which they are so dropped. Students may activate their e-mail accounts by visiting FIU's Webmail.

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his/her name is on the official class roll. Faculty should not allow non-enrolled students to remain in class.

If students have questions, they should contact the Undergraduate Advising Office to ensure their courses satisfy the stated prerequisites.

The FIU Registrar's Office will not permit retroactive enrollment beyond the third week of classes.
