In Fall 2014, FIU will offer "ARC1990 - Introduction to Design Thinking - Mapping the Visible World" with Professor Alastair Gordon. This class will explore how man-made objects, art, architecture, landscape, urbanism--virtually everything in the human environment--has been designed in response to a set of unseen forces and circumstances. Every week, the instructor will give an on-line lecture that deals with a different aspect of design thinking. (This will not be a conventional or chronological history but more of a thematic approach to the subject.) Weekly reading assignments will be posted as will a set of prompts, queries, and suggestions for deeper study. As a final project, all students will be required to present an interpretive project that examines a certain object, building or space. (The project may combine both visual and written interpretations but some writing will be required.)
Alastair Gordon is a Contributing Editor for Architecture and Design at the Wall Street Journal. He is an award-winning critic, curator, filmmaker and author who has written about art, architecture and the environment for many publications including The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, Interior Design, Town & Country, House & Garden and Dwell.
